According to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), dating site fraud is up 70% over the past week. You may be asking yourself, “How can dating sites be used to commit financial fraud”. The answer is more complex than you may think. These organized criminals are targeting these sites to recruit money mules.
What’s a money mule? Money mules are people who knowingly, or unknowingly, serve criminals and criminal organizations by transporting fraudulently gained money to the fraudsters. This practice is often used by fraudsters as it helps conceal their identity and makes it more difficult for the authorities to detect and arrest them.
While there are precautions and security measures taken by American National Bank, it is important for you, the customer, to arm yourself with information so that we can work together to help stop these scams.
Financial loss is not the only reason to inform yourself. You may be held liable legally, as well. Money Mules aren’t off the hook, even if they are unaware. They can be prosecuted for the illegal transport of fraudulently gained money. To gain a greater understanding on the risk, methods used by criminals, and the potential consequences, the Federal Bureau of Investigation issued a public service announcement we want to make you aware of so that you can protect yourself from being scammed into becoming a Money Mule.
